Liver, Liver diseases, some signs, symptoms and treatment

LiverLiver and its function

Liver is the largest internal organ in the body. It is also considered the biggest gland. Liver plays a vital role in metabolism and many other functions like glucose storage as glycogen, protein synthesis and detoxification of drugs, toxins and waste products from metabolism. Bile which plays a vital role in digestion is also produced by the liver. Many other high-volume biochemical reactions are also performed and regulated by it. “Hepar” is the Greek word for liver and many medical terms that start with hepato or hepatic are related to liver.

What is liver disease?

Any such disease as affects liver and its function is considered a liver disease. Liver disease often causes serious complications like jaundice, fluid retention, liver failure etc. Cirrhosis, hepatitis, fatty liver and some liver cancers are other types of liver diseases.

The real causes behind some types of liver diseases, particularly, those which present at the time of birth are not known. Some other kinds like hemochromatosis are because of inherited genes from parents. Hepatitis C and alcoholism are some common causes of cirrhosis in the United States.

Use of cell phone as a cause of cancer

Use of cell phone as a cause of cancerCell phones and other electrical devices can cause cancer among the users” it has been a heated issue for a quite long time.

Origin of this concept

The origin of this widespread concept is those scientific studies that suggest a link between cell phones and brain cancer is found. Similarly, many lawsuits and news headlines show concerns about possible link between cell phones and cancer. Almost 30% American believe that a connection is found between cancer and cell phones.

What is the real thing?

There are some studies that suggest a link between the use of cell phone and some rare kinds of brain tumors but according to some other well-designed population studies no such link is found between cell phone use and brain tumor. It is not an easy task to conduct precise studies to know the risk factors for some rare cancers like brain cancer. The biggest hurdle in the way of precise study is the collection of reliable data. In this connection, those studies that gather information from healthy people about latent risk factors and then follow the cases for many years to observe which diseases development can be relied.

Tatas to set up ayurveda centre

Tatas to set up ayurveda centre

In a move to catapult ayurveda to the main stream of healthcare in the country, the Tata Group is setting up the Indian Institute of Ayurveda Integrated Medicine (IIAIM) in Bangalore.

The institute will function in association with the Department of Science and Technology (DST), and the Foundation for Revitalisation of Local Health Traditions (FRLHT), a Bangalore-based NGO that supports traditional healing methods.

Designed by FRLHT on the lines of Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) and Indian Institutes of Science (ISC), the IIAIM will act as India’s premier finishing school for qualified ayurvedic doctors, post graduates, physiotherapists and Yoga experts.

The Institute will offer highly-specialised, short-term and long-term courses to help the students practice in accordance with the demands of modern healthcare delivery systems, besides advanced research and post-doctoral programmes.

The IIAIM and a 100-bed Ayurveda and Yoga hospital, with a total investment of Rs 64 crore, will come up at Yelahanka, Bangalore, by 2009. The Tata Group’s Sir Dorabji Tata Trust will invest Rs 34 crore. The rest is likely to come from DST, said Dr G G Gangadharan, joint director, FRLHT.

“Though about 15,000 graduates come out from 310 ayurveda colleges in India every year, few of them are able to establish themselves as good professionals owing to their inability to adapt to the needs of modern healthcare. The programmes at IIAIM will resolve this issue and help them practice anywhere in the world,” said Gangadharan.

Apart from this, the Sir Dorabji Trust has agreed to fund Rs 15 crore to the Ayurvedic firm Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala in Kerala to undertake drug research based on medicinal plants, said Jasmine Pavri, programme officer for the trust in Mumbai.

It may be noted that the Tatas, who had exited from the pharmaceutical business almost a decade ago by hiving off their Rallis India’s pharma division, re-entered the scene two years ago by promoting Advinus Therapeutics, a Bangalore-based pure drug discovery company headed by Dr Reshmi Barbaiya, a former Ranbaxy R&D head.

On the internet, it is better to consult a health society before you buy cheap phentermine or even cheap cialis from any drug store online, just to avail viagra online.

The Tatas have also invested in Avesthagen, a Bangalore-based biotechnology company and Indigene, a Hyderabad-based biopharmaceutical firm.

FRLHT is also planning to set up 100 Ayurvedic clinics and 150 mother and childcare centres in the country.

Rising food prices may cause malnourishment among 1.5m Indian Children

According to a report of UNICEF, almost 1.5 million Indian children may become malnourished because of rising food prices worldwide. UNICEF also reports that high prices of food can become dangerous for vulnerable women and kids all around the South Asia.

The largest number of malnourished children, in the world, is already found in this region and there may be an alarming increase in their number in the coming days.UNICEF says that even before the present food crisis, signs of stunted growth were observed in almost half of all Indian children.

On Tuesday, Daniel Toole, UNICEF’s regional director for South Asia, told in the Indian capital, Delhi that it was a perfect storm; number of malnutrition was increasing in a region where they were already in majority.

Air Pollution, no solution

If we look for a donkey with horns, we may succeed to find but sorry to say in this so-called civilized and modern age we can’t get some fresh air to take deep breaths. Pollution is one of those gifts this modern rapid, fast progress in industrialization offers to humankind.

It wasn’t convincingly realized before but now some researches suggest that even low levels of pollution can also be dangerous for the heart and lungs. The analyses of the researchers were published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine. The researchers focused on how small particles that were found in the air affected the function of lungs. In this new research, some studies that were published in the same journal earlier this year were also defended by the researchers. In those previous studies it was shown, how air pollution contributed to heart problems. Is it a grave issue or need not to be worry? U.S. news asked some key questions from renowned experts in this connection.

How can you define particulate pollution?

A report from American Lung Association defines particulate pollution as a mixture of solid and liquid elements in the air that comes from natural sources as wildfires and dust storms, human activities as to burn fossil fuels in the factories or to use diesel engines. Some other particles also take place when some chemicals or materials act in response with another chemical or material in the atmosphere.

Excessive use of painkillers beget further pain instead of relief among patients with migraine

Painkillers beget pain, isn’t it strange and somewhat shocking that can not be relied. But you believe it or not the truth is that almost one out of four headaches is considered the result of overuse of common painkiller pills.

Pain killers that are easily available over the counter and prescribed medication both can cause headache if they are over-used.

The over-use of these painkillers bring different signs of trouble including headaches that arise 15 or more days during a month and if these pain killers are regularly used ,this headache gets worse with the passage of time.

Cure has the ability to become disease and sometimes cure itself is a disease.
Almost four percent of Americans have to suffer headaches daily and scientists blame stress, Jaw disorders and some genetic problem. But a recent research suggests that the real culprits are those medications which use to get rid of these headaches. The problem is far graver than the scientists have been considering it. As almost 25 percent of all headaches are due to the overuse of these prescribed and over the counter available medications.
